The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a new Netflix Original TV show, delivers horror, monsters, and spooky witchcraft.  The show was released on Oct. 26, just in time for Halloween. 

For many, the bewitching tale definitely did not disappoint. Sabrina, played by Kiernan Shipka, is introduced as a typical 15 year-old teen. She has many close high school friends and a boyfriend named Harvey Kinkle, played by Ross Lynch. 

“Ross Lynch is a very popular actor and seems to fit the role nicely,” said freshman Ashley Cohen. 

Sabrina is excited about starting a pro-women’s club at school to help support a fellow classmate, Suzie, who is bullied. However, she lives with her witch aunts: Zelda (Miranda Otto) and Hilda (Lucy Davis).

Zelda is rough and caustic, whereas Hilda is warm and gentle. They both have been grooming Sabrina to be able to fit in with the mortals since her childhood, as it was her parents’ dream for her to.

Sabrina later learns that her parents’ deaths may not have been an accident.  As she awaits her quickly approaching 16th birthday, which coincidently occurs on Halloween, a deep, dark decision begins to torment her. 

Sabrina is forced to choose between living among a world of mortals or those that practice witchcraft and dark violence.  Ultimately, her decision leads to the very chilling adventures of Sabrina Spellman. 

“I’m always looking for a show that’s full of horror and mystery,” said senior Nick Kapoor

While fighting evil forces and uncovering eerie family secrets, Ambrose Spellman (Chance Perdomo), Sabrina’s male witch cousin from England, joins her crusade in spirit. 

Currently under house arrest, Ambrose offers Sabrina solutions to some of her doubts and questions. He tells Sabrina where to eat an apple from the oldest tree, which operates like a fortune teller, deep in the forest. His advice guides her on some of her journeys.

Ambrose later refers Sabrina to attorney Daniel Webster, who specializes in witch law. Madame Satan, portrayed by Michelle Gomez, is an ex-lover of Sabrina’s father. She also bewitched the body of Mary Wardwell, who was Sabrina’s favorite teacher at Baxter High School. 

Sabrina uses her magical powers to defend her friends and punish her enemies, such as Madame Satan. 

“After watching the first episode I was hooked,” said sophomore Sari Hartstein.  “The show is filled with magic, horror, and surprises!”

Viewers will be attracted to both the young, diverse character palette and chilling plot. Teens will be captivated by a show that is brimming with terror and bloody witchcraft.  Sprouting from the older show Sabrina the Teenage Witch, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will also provide some nostalgia to the older generations.  

“A spookier twist on a classic,” said senior Maya Leong. 

The new show is also a companion series to Riverdale, a hit drama series.  Since Riverdale was so popular, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina also drew in a lot of attention from fans of that show.

This show seems to connect to a lot of what everyone in this generation is looking for in a series.  

Many students are thinking about watching it too, as it compiles the intriguing themes of darkness and fear.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will have you both scared to death and obsessed. Its first season is available on Netflix to binge and watch now, so take a chance and spook yourself!
