If you know what you want to be when you grow up, have you ever thought about whether you even need to know the information you learn in classes like English and social studies? The information learned in humanities classes can be helpful, but if you know the path you are going down, these skills may not pop up as much.
STEM classes are more important than humanities classes for many reasons. Unlike humanities classes, STEM classes can split up into many different topics depending on what you want to learn. Specifically, when you want to have a job that might not include what you learn during humanities classes, it can be important to take a STEM class to excel within your field. STEM classes can also help improve society. Those who want to become scientists, can help improve technology in the modern world using skills like problem solving.
Others would say that humanities can give you many more life skills because of learning more grammar and vocabulary.
“I think humanities is better because I think English is the class where it has the most real word application and humanities gets you further in life then STEM does. It’s more important to learn about our past so we can do better in the future. It is also important to develop skills that we can use in the future,” said sophomore Jacob Lenter.
However, even though humanities subjects can be very important for life skills, many question what these classes can do for you in a specialized field.
“You don’t need English and Social Studies to get a job, and there are some jobs that require mathematics,” said sophomore Ethan Ong.
Another perspective to consider is that unlike humanities classes, STEM classes can help you with materials that many professions find very helpful to know. For example, any type of engineer would need STEM classes.
This connects back to the argument earlier about how humanities classes can be most helpful with life skills, and not with a certain profession. However, humanities classes aren’t just helpful with life skills, STEM classes can help with that too.
One life skill that can be very important to learn in STEM classes is the ability to problem solve. In math, you may learn one way to solve a problem but say it doesn’t work one time, you have to figure put a different way to get the correct solution.
“I think STEM classes are more important. We use math in our everyday lives. Think about proofs in math class. You have to problem solve, and put things in order,” said sophomore Luke Friedman.
STEM classes teach people life skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, and creativity. The skills learned are more often applied in jobs than the skills learned in humanities classes.
Lastly, STEM classes are important because they lead others to a path where people can make a difference in the community. Have you ever heard on the news of a new scientific discovery? Scientists are able to do this by choosing the STEM path and making new advancements in society with the skills they learn. STEM classes are important because they lead others to create technological improvements within society.
To conclude, STEM classes are much more important than humanities classes in many ways. This is because, unlike the humanities, STEM has way more opportunities. As a result, even though humanities classes can be really important, STEM classes that start you on the path to make technological advancements in society, learn more problem solving skills, and become successful in their future profession are more valuable in the long run.
