As the field hockey team enters the home stretch of its 2012 season, it can reflect on the impressive performance of one of its captains, senior Lauren Desimone. In her final season, Desimone played forward, a position where she has to play both offense and defense. Although most of her recognition comes from her offensive prowess, she is also a standout player on defense. She received the prestigious All-Conference award her junior and senior years and was chosen as Newsday’s “Athlete of the Week” four different times and received the award of Most Improved Player in all of Nassau County. Of all of her accomplishments, Desimone’s most impressive is her selection to the field hockey All-State team. Determined by the coaches, ten girls in the entire county are chosen for this honor. Desimone is only the second student from Schreiber to receive this honor in the last 12 years. Statistically, her season is one of the most impressive in recent memory. Desimone racked up 18 goals and 9 assists – both among the highest totals on Long Island.
“Without a doubt, Lauren is one of the most aggressive athletes I have ever coached,” said Head Coach Mr. Joseph Lederer. “Not only that but she is one of the most refined players I have ever encountered; her stick skills are above most other people in the county, her speed and agility are a real positive part of her game. She can almost ‘will’ a goal. When we are down, we know that Lauren will step up and do something for the team.”
Despite her individual accomplishments, Desimone’s focus remains on the team. Using her position as captain, she has been able to motivate her teammates. Desimone attributes the team’s success to several key players, including seniors Danielle Rosmarin, Kristin Kujan, and Miranda Giovenco. She, along with these three girls, have exhibited a strong connection that helped the team maintain a strong record this season. Their current record of 11 wins and two losses puts them in great position for a playoff run.
Being an athlete of her caliber, Desimone brings an impressive work ethic to her sport.
“It is really important to always work at your sport, and, during the summer, it is a really important time to improve your game and work with your teammates to make sure you’re as ready as possible come fall,” said Desimone
Desimone will look to continue her past success in her final games, hopefully culminating with success in the County Championship.
