Leather is revealing the dark side of top designers and style icons, producing a gothic glamour like never before. This trend has been dominating the runways since this past spring and has prepared the public for the launch of leather-laden lineups in the fall. Leather is a timeless material, but it is being taken to a whole new level this season.
This season is all about showing your wild side. By adding leather to any outfit, one can turn a basic look into an edgy ensemble. From accents on tops and sweaters to leather pants, skirts, dresses, and, of course, jackets, this material is making an appearance in nearly every item of clothing imaginable. Leather has also made an appearance in accessories like necklaces, bracelets, and even hairpieces.
“I’m so glad that I can finally take out my leather jacket again as the weather gets colder,” said senior Ali Peltz. “The leather does not only help me stay warm, but it matches with anything I decide to wear it with.”
Many may be skeptical about participating in the leather trend, not only because of its bold appearance, but because of its price. Authentic leather can be very pricey and often does not fit the budget of a high school student. If you are interested in the trend but are not willing to pay over $200 for a leather jacket, have no fear; there are other options.
Pleather, a synthetic leather, is the solution for anyone looking to stay trendy while remaining within their budget. Pleather is an almost identical alternative to leather that is listed at very reasonable prices. It allows people who do not support the production of leather, as it is made from animal hide, to participate in the trend as well.
“I love the leather trend, but I would never wear real leather,” said junior Rebecca Schaub. “Because so many items are produced in pleather, it allows me to wear the trend without supporting the potential harm of animals for fashion.”
Aside from the standard matte finish, leather can be found in patent, distressed, embossed, and dyed finishes. These different finishes are what make leather so versatile and easy to match with any outfit.
Leather is a staple for this upcoming season. Incorporating this trend into your wardrobe will force you to take more risks and branch off from typically “safe” outfits. If you’re looking for some edge and are not afraid to join the dark side, leather is something you do not want to overlook.
