What new music are you listening to this Weeknd?
This month was full of new music releases. Cardi B released her third album,
Invasion of Privacy, on April 6, while Drake dropped a new song called “Nice For What.” Former
One Direction member Zayn released his new single, Let Me, on April 12, along with a new
music video, which features model Sofia Jamora. In addition, The Weeknd dropped a
new EP, My Dear Melancholy, on March 30. All of these artists’ new albums and singles are
competing for number one on the charts.
Cardi B.’s album includes 13 new rap songs featuring artists such as Migos, Chance the
Rapper, Kehlani, J Balvin, 21 Savage, and SZA. This album has already broken records
including most first-week streams by a female artist with over 100 million streaming on Apple
Music, a record which was previously held by Taylor Swift. Invasion of Privacy has quickly taken the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s album chart, making her the fifth female rapper to do so in history.
“It’s amazing how successful Cardi B. has become. This album is amazing,” said
freshman Sari Hartstein.
Cardi B. debuted her album on Saturday Night Live where she performed her new song,
“Be Careful.” During this performance she confirmed her rumored pregnancy with her fiancé,
Offset, by wearing a tight dress that showcased her pregnant stomach. This news further increased
the popularity of her new album, driving the press crazy.
In addition to Cardi B’s album, Drake’s new single, “Nice For What,” is climbing the
U.S charts. This song, which is currently the number one hit in the UK, has gotten many positive
reviews from music critics. It is expected to top Drake’s other hit, “God’s Plan,” as number one
in the US, which has been at the top for 11 consecutive weeks.
My Dear Melancholy is the Weeknd’s first EP, or mini-album. It features 6 new songs:
“Call Out My Name,” “Try Me”, “Wasted Times”, “I Was Never There”, “Hurt You”, and “Privilege”. “Call
Out My Name” is currently at number four on the Hot 100 chart followed by “Try Me” at number
26. “Wasted Times” is currently at 27, “I Was Never There” is at number 35, “Hurt You” is at 43, and
finally “Privilege” is at 52.
“The Weeknd’s new album is my favorite of 2018 by far. His songs are so good,” said
junior Molly Schiff.
