Netflix original movies become instant sensations

In the past few months, several Netflix movies have become very popular. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and Sierra Burgess is a Loser are rom-coms that everyone is talking about. They both share up-and-coming actor Noah Centineo as their star. Alongside him stars Lana Condor in To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, and Shannon Purser in Sierra Burgess is a Loser. All three are young, promising stars who are definitely going to do well in their futures.

Sierra Burgess is a Loser is the story of high school outcast Sierra, played by Purser, who accidentally begins texting a popular football star, Jamey, who is played by Noah Centineo. Jamey thinks that he is texting Veronica, a popular bully who goes to their school, and Sierra continues to lead him on. Throughout the movie, Veronica and Sierra become close friends, as they try to convince Jamey that he is actually texting Veronica, when it is really Sierra that he is falling in love with. We also see character transformations in both Sierra and Veronica, as Sierra becomes less of an outcast and Veronica learns to be herself. Sierra Burgess is a Loser seems to be the less-liked of the two movies.

“Both movies were good, but Sierra Burgess is a Loser was not my favorite,” said sophomore Remi Haas.

Some even argue that the movie romanticizes catfishing, which is illegal. It sends a bad message and teaches young kids watching that lying could work in their favor.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is the end-of-summer movie that everyone is talking about. Yet again, the film is about another outcast, but this time with a different twist. Lara Jean, played by Condor, befriends popular athlete Peter Kavinsky, played by Noah Centineo, and the two pretend to be dating in order to make Peter’s ex girlfriend jealous, but they end up becoming close. Throughout the movie, Lara Jean becomes less shy and more outgoing because of Peter, and he helps her show her true self.

“The movie is amazing and is one of the greatest Netflix movies yet,” said sophomore Sari Hartstein.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before has quickly become a craze, and teenagers across the country are wild about it. Fans are relating themselves to Peter and Lara Jean, and admire them greatly. The stars themselves did not know how big of a hit their movie was going to be, and are extremely proud of it.

“I think it’s cool, man. I feel like as far as relating to someone, I think Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky really relate to each other and have such a beautiful dynamic by the end of the film. To find that, I’m totally behind that concept. Finding your own Peter Kavinsky, finding your own Lara Jean. I’m 100% behind that,” said Centineo.

Both movies’ popularity spread like wildfire as they became viral sensations. This spread in popularity is different than many movies in the past, since teens did not have to go to the movie theaters to become involved in the obsession. Instead, they could watch, or re-watch, the two movies as many times as they wanted by streaming the films from the comfort of their homes.

Overall, the reason the movies are such a big hit is because of the amazing acting by all three protagonists. Centineo has been featured in many shows and movies before, such as The Fosters and the Disney movie How to Build a Better Boy. However, people have really began to notice him because of these two movies. Purser has also had supporting roles like Barb in Stranger Things, and Ethel Muggs in Riverdale, but Sierra Burgess is a Loser is one of her first lead roles. Finally, Condor played Jubilee in the movie X-Men: Apocalypse, but To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before has grown her fan base to a great extent. All in all, it is clear that Netflix has made many hit originals lately, but To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and Sierra Burgess is a Loser are some of the biggest. These movies have put new and amazing actors into the spotlight, and everyone is excited to see what is next for them.
