New York.  Arguably the most successful sports city in the country.  Since the state has one of the largest markets for sports, many of the best players choose to play here.  

There are two baseball teams, the Mets and the Yankees, two basketball teams, the Knicks and the Nets, three football teams, the Giants, Jets, and Bills, and two hockey teams, the Islanders and Rangers.  

These are some of the most successful sports franchises of all time.  To highlight a few of the major accomplishments of New York teams, the Yankees won 27 World Series, the Mets won two World Series, the Knicks have won two National Basketball Association titles, and the Nets won two American Basketball Association titles before they joined the NBA. To add to this impressive list, the Giants won four Super Bowls, the Jets won one Super Bowl, the Bills won four conservative American Football Conference championships in the late twentieth century, the Islanders won four Stanley Cups, and the Rangers won four Stanley Cups.  

Overall, New York has 13 more championship titles than Boston, the city with the next most amounts of championships.  However, this year, these nine teams have not been able to show how successful New York has been over the last century.  

In baseball, the Yankees were one of the best teams in the league, while the Mets were one of the worst.  The Yankees are considered to be a top team as they have Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, Gleyber Torres, Miguel Andujar, Didi Gregorius, Luis Severino, and Masahiro Tanaka.  

This past season the Yankees went 100-62, and lost to the Boston Red Sox in the American League Divisional Series in four games.  However, although the Yankees had an early playoff exit, they had the third best record in the league, behind only the Houston Astros and Red Sox.  

Meanwhile, the Mets, finished fourth in the National League East, which was only better than the Miami Marlins, the third worst Major League Baseball team.  

The Mets finished with a 77-85 record, which ranks 20th out of the 30 MLB teams.  This is even worse considering the Mets just played in the World Series in 2015, and played in the Wild Card Game in 2016.  

The roster is very similar to those teams, but the players have just become older and run down.  One of their best players, Yoenis Cespedes, is injured and will be out for most of the first half of next season  In addition, their captain, David Wright, just retired from baseball.

The lone bright star of this team was Jacob Degrom, who posted a sub-2.00 earned run average, and is expected to win the National League Cy Young Award.  While the Mets were one of the worst teams in baseball, the Yankees carried New York into the postseason.  

The Knicks and Nets are currently two of the worst NBA teams.  Last season, the Knicks, who finished 29-53, and the Nets, who finished 28-54, finished as the ninth and eighth worst teams in basketball, respectively.  

This means that both teams got high draft picks, and were able to pick some of the best amauratur talent.  However, both teams are off to very bad starts.  

Currently, the Knicks, with a 4-11 record, are the fourth worst team in the league.  The Nets, at 6-9, are the eight worst team.  The Knicks are without their star player, Kristaps Porzingis, for the foreseeable future because of an ACL tear.

Moreover, the Nets are without Caris LeVert, who dislocated his ankle, and he currently has no timetable for his recover.  

Both teams are suspected of possible “tanking,” or intentionally losing, in order to get the best amateurs in next year’s draft.  They hope to be able to get prospects such as Zion Williamson or RJ Barrett.  The Knicks and Nets are currently two of the worst teams in the NBA. 

The Giants, Jets, and Bills are the three of the six worst teams in National Football League.  Last year, the Giants finished 3-13, the Jets finished 5-11, and the Bills surprisingly made the playoffs with a 9-7 record.  

However, this year, the Giants are on par with their record from last season at 2-7, the Jets are worse than last season at 3-7, and Bills have completely fallen apart with a 3-7 record.  

The Giants, Jets, and Bills would get the third, fifth, and sixth picks in next year’s draft, respectively.  However, getting a high pick may not necessarily fix many of their issues.  

All three teams have offensive issues, and the top of next year’s draft is  defensive heavy.  The Giants and Bills still need to find the QB of the future, and the Jets need to find a solid wide receiver or running back to support Sam Darnold.  

These three teams are in deep ditches, and there is currently no light at the end of tunnel.

The Islanders and Rangers are no better than any other New York sports team.  The Islanders finished last season with 80 points, and the Rangers finished with 77 points.  They both ranked in the bottom 10 teams of the National Hockey League.  

Then, this offseason the Islanders lost their Captain, John Tavares, and after trading away some of their best players last offseason, the Rangers entered a rebuilding year.  

Neither team was expected to contend this year, but the Islanders have disproved this notion.  The Islanders have 22 points, which is only five points behind the league-leading Nashville Predators.  Meanwhile the Rangers have 20 points, and although they only have two points less than the Islanders, the Islanders have looked much better on the ice.  

Both teams are hoping to continue to get better, and hopefully contend for a championship within the next few seasons.  The Islanders and Rangers seem to be trending towards improvement, and are a solstice for New York sports fans. 

Eight of the nine professional teams that are associated with New York have underperformed the past two seasons.  Hopefully, within the next few seasons, these teams can turn it around and win a championship.
