The Victoria’s Secret Fashion show is a yearly event that many look forward to.  The popular lingerie brand spends millions to create this spectacle, where they can show off their latest designs.  

Some of the most sought-after models in the fashion industry walk the show, including Kendall Jenner, Gigi and Bella Hadid, and Winnie Harlow, just to name a few.  The show also has famous musicians perform on the runway each year. This year, Shawn Mendes, The Chainsmokers, Rita Ora, Bebe Rexha, Kelsea Ballerini, and The Struts performed alongside the models.  The show took place on Nov. 8 in New York City, and it will air on ABC on Dec. 2. 

The fashion show is known for having the models wear huge angel wings along with the lingerie. Each year, the wing designs get more extravagant, and people anxiously wait to see what the brand has come up with.  This year, Victoria’s Secret collaborated with designer Mary Katrantzou, and this collaboration debuted on the runway during the show.  

“I can’t wait to see what the outfits look like this year. Victoria’s Secret always seems to outdo themselves each year. I’m also looking forward to watching Shawn Mendes perform. The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show always has the best performers,” said senior Carly Hecht. 

Every year, hundreds of models audition for the show, but only a handful get chosen. Sometimes, the most known models are not even chosen to walk in the show. Around 50 models were chosen this year; some of them being newcomers, and some of them being seasoned pros.  Some newcomers include Sadie Newman, Winnie Harlow, Sabah Koj, Mayowa Nicholas, and many others. Some of the girls modeling were discovered as young as 14 years old, and many said it has been their dream to walk in the show since they were little girls.  

In addition to the new “Angels” on the runway, there were still many familiar faces walking in the show. For instance, models Behati Prinsloo, Taylor Hill, and Candice Swanepoel annually walk in the show. This year was particularly special for one Angel, Adriana Lima, as it was her 17th and final show. Lima has walked in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion show since 2000 when she was just 19 years old. Now, at 37 years old, she has hung up her wings and walked in her last show as an Angel on Nov. 8. 

Not all people are fans of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, as Victoria’s Secret is not known for being inclusive.  For instance, they do not cast transgender or plus-size models. 

“I feel like Victoria’s Secret really isn’t inclusive.  It’s size range is pretty terrible and it really doesn’t advertise much size diversity,” said sophomore Jake Rieber.  

In an interview with Vogue, Chief Marketing Officer Ed Razek said that he did not think Victoria’s Secret should be casting transgender models in their show.  

“The show is a fantasy,” said Razek.

In this comment, Razek was implying that plus-sized and transgender women do not fit the “fantasy” that Victoria’s Secret is trying to create with their show.  This statement offended many people, and a large number of celebrities have come out against the brand. Rihanna made comments on Twitter after Razek came after her lingerie brand, SavagexFenty. These comments were highly offensive to both plus-sized and transgender women.  Victoria’s Secret did issue an apology on Twitter, but many are still upset by these comments. 

Even with these offensive comments, millions of people will watch the show this year, and for some it is a yearly tradition.  There are high expectations for this years show, and many cannot wait to see how the brand outdid itself when the show airs.
