Sensitive reactions to traditional holiday songs are unjustified

Loesser.  Many supporters of the #MeToo movement claim that this is an outdated song with sexist connotations, which is justifying date-rape.  For instance, the line where Loesser asks, “Say what’s in this drink?” has particularly sparked up much controversy.

“Songs are meant to be talked about and create different emotions for people, but it is the listeners choice whether or not to be offended by it,” said junior Emily Edwards.

Many people are appalled by the attacks on Loesser’s song, arguing that it was never intended to emphasize any foul actions towards women.

When the song was released in 1940, American slang was slightly different and people used different metaphors to convey their emotions.  Despite all the uproar, people still believe that the song merely represents a man chasing after the woman whom he adores.

“Baby it’s Cold Outside is a song my father wrote to sing with my mother at parties,” said Susan Loesser, daughter of the song’s artist.

Susan additionally stressed the fact that one must read into the song based on the time it was written.  It is important to take into consideration that during that time period, it was not socially acceptable for women to spend the night with their boyfriend or fiancé.  In addition, the phrase “what’s in this drink?” was a fairly common one used in that time to express a woman’s desire to go against such social expectations and stay with her significant other, while blaming her decision on the influence of alcohol. Thus, when taken in this context, the song does not display any indication of sexual assault or unwanted pressuring.

“People used to say ‘what’s in this drink’ as a joke.  You know, this drink is going straight to my head so what’s in this drink?  Back then it didn’t mean you drugged me,” said Loesser.

It is understandable how people can misinterpret this song in some negative way considering the conversation between the man and woman in the song.  However, many people tend to act very hypocritically, as nobody takes offense to the many modern day songs in this day and age that poorly represent women and encourage drug use.

For instance, the song “Crazy Rap” by Afroman discusses performing sexual actions with numerous women while smoking and joking about it with his friends.

Despite the foul language used by Afroman to describe the sexual acts with women, there has yet to be a problem with the song, since people acknowledge that the artist had no bad intentions.

“People have the ability to change a song on the radio or their phone if they take offense by it, but it is no ones business to prevent others from listening to a song they enjoy, in this case, ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside,’” said junior Jamie Ambos.

Frank Loesser had no intentions of creating a song to offend anyone, and simply wanted to create a song that brought a smile to his wife’s face during the winter time.  There will always be something in this world that will have mixed reactions, but going to extreme lengths are unnecessary, especially over a cheerful holiday song.
