On Sunday, Jan. 5 the 77th Annual Golden Globes Awards was held at the Beverly
Hilton, in Los Angeles, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the NBC network. This event honors
excellence in the fields of film and television.
Ninety three members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) presented
these awards to various people. This association is made up of international journalists who run
and vote on the Globes.
The host of this esteemed event was Ricky Gervais, an English stand-up comedian,
actor, screenwriter, director, producer, musician, and presenter as well as an author. In fact, his
monologue was deemed controversial and has stirred up some strong responses on social
“This is the very last time I’m doing this, which will make for a fun evening,” said Gervais.
The Golden Globes consists of distinct categories that reward best actor, actress, and
film. These types include motion picture-drama, television series musical or comedy, animated
feature film, foreign language film, drama, and many more. This organization strives to award
and nominate as many superstars as possible for the numerous categories that are provided.
“I just loved the categories as well as the talented actors and actresses who were
nominated,” said freshman Theadora Rabman.
Films like Marriage Story, The Irishman, Joker and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
were all included in nominations for best picture while movies like Hustlers and Little Women
scored acting nominations. Although Netflix was shut out of the best picture categories at the
2019 Golden Globes, this year was a different story. They received nominations for motion
pictures known as The Two Popes and Dolemite Is My Name. Amazon, however, did not
acquire as many nominations, but Annette Bening and Emma Thompson, from The Report and
Late Night, were recognized in acting categories.
The film Parasite earned nominations for a foreign language film as well as for directing
and screenplay. This highlights the fact that foreign language movies are beginning to gain an
appreciation on behalf of viewers and the HFPA alike. Saoirse Ronan from Little Women is
being recognized for the best performance by an actress in a motion picture- drama along with
Antonio Banderas, the star of Pain and Glory, for the best performance by an actor in a motion
picture drama.
“Little Women has taught an extremely important lesson, and Saoirse Ronan helped to
exemplify this. I hope she wins as best actress,” said freshman Geordan Sparber.
Some of the actors from the Golden Globes who won include Awkwafina, Brad Pitt,
Taron Egerton, and more. Awkwafina won her first Golden Globe for Actress in a Musical or
Comedy Motion. Brad Pitt won Supporting Actor in A Motion Picture, which is his third Golden
Globe award. Taron Egerton won his first Golden Globe for Actor in a Musical or Comedy film.

Movies that won included 1917, Joker, and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
Overall, the Golden Globes is a collection of Hollywood’s biggest and brightest stars. It
is the first award show of each new year which is followed by the Academy Awards, also known
as the Oscars, in February. Unlike the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes brings more of a
fun and casual atmosphere. Nonetheless, the 2020 Golden Globes were a success for many
new actors, as well as returning nominees.
