Despite criticism, comedy-drama Emily In Paris stands out in October streaming
Emily in Paris is a new 10-episode Netflix original series that debuted on Oct. 2. It stars Lily Collins who plays Emily, a millennial American that has moved to Paris to work at a French marketing firm. The show follows the challenges Emily faces as she adjusts to French culture while attempting to make new friendships and find romance.
The show received a lot of attention and was one of the most watched Netflix shows in Oct. Even though it continues to be very popular, many critics, such as Rolling Stones, slammed Emily in Paris for having little substance and inaccurate French scenes. However, much of Netflix’s audience loved the show. The show attracted viewers who were seeking a lighthearted show to take a break from studying or working, worrying about the pandemic, and being inundated with election coverage. A lot of Schreiber students also watched the show because its creator, Darren Star, is the creator of a plethora of popular television series, such as Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, and Sex and the City.
“I really enjoyed watching this show and it acted as a really good escape from the piles of school work and other activities on my plate,” said freshman Ella Kane.
Lily Collins has been acting for over a decade, including her role as Snow White in Mirror, Mirror and, in 2019, she co-starred in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile with Zac Efron. But, given the buzz of Emily in Paris, this may be her most popular role. Collins is the daughter of Phil Collins and Jill Tavelman. Phil Collins is a famous musician who had more Top 40 hits in the 1980’s than any other musician (including his solo career and as a member in the band Genesis).
“I really enjoyed watching one of my favorite actors play Emily in this series and I can’t wait to see what she does next,” said freshman Holly Sternlicht.
Emily in Paris is also known for its modern Parisian fashion. First, in nearly every scene, Emily is wearing a new outfit that is incredibly unique and modern. Patricia Field is the costume designer for the show and she was also the designer for Sex and the City. Many have drawn parallels between Emily’s and Carrie Bradshaw’s looks as a result of this. The outfits on Emily are inspiring a wave of Parisian looks which can be seen in many social media influencers’ posts and blogs.
“One of my favorite parts of watching the show was seeing all of Emily’s unique and stylish outfits throughout the series,” said freshman Natasha Rabman.
Throughout the show Emily also posts her journey in Paris on Instagram on an account dubbed @EmilyInParis. The show greatly uses Paris as the backdrop for the show. Whether it is Emily walking into a pastry shop, a view of the Eiffel Tower at night, or a gourmet French meal, many people will love watching the show just for the feel of Paris in a time where most are confined to their familiar hometowns.
“I really enjoyed watching the French aspects throughout the series, from the chocolate croissants to the scenery,” said freshman Taylor Schorr.
You will have to watch the show for yourself to get the full Emily In Paris experience. With the final episode ending on a major cliffhanger, many fans are hoping for a greenlight on season two..
