Crazy Cakes brings delicious and custom designed treats to Port Washington
A new bakery called Crazy Cakes recently opened its door in Port Washington. located at 52 Main Street. It’s spot in town has given the bakery a lot of exposure. Crazy Crakes currently caters to those with nut allergies and provides nut-free cupcakes, cookies, cakes, chocolate-dipped treats, hot or cold beverages, and many other delicious desserts to its customers. The bakery also allows event reservations to be hosted in their party room, where customers can decorate their own choice of sweets, with a wide selection of sprinkles and other fun decorations. Reservations and pre-orders are only accepted by phone.
“I heard many of my friends went to Crazy Cakes and there was a lot of good feedback, so I decided to go as well and I definitely wasn’t disappointed. I would recommend other students to stop by and get some treats after school, especially their mini-cupcake set,” said Freshman Helena Franchetti.
The owner of Crazy Cakes, Erica Tiger, was an artist who worked with ceramics and glass before establishing her business. Her creativity allowed her to make edible creations, and as a result, the name Crazy Cakes was born. The business started at home, where she baked cakes and treats for her kids. Slowly but surely, friends and family began offering to pay her for her creations, whether it was for small gatherings or large events. The idea of getting a food truck eventually formed, and through the truck business, Tiger started attending festivals and visiting people’s houses, offering grab-and-go coffees and cupcakes. Not only did people fall in love with her tasty treats, but they also enjoyed the large variety of cake flavors, toppings, and fillings that were available.
“When I first began making cakes for families and friends, I got many comments saying that my cakes were crazy or how crazy these designs were, hence what created the name of my business, Crazy Cakes,” said owner Erica Tiger.
Erica decided it was time to turn her cupcake truck business into a storefront, but the pandemic greatly affected these plans. Due to Covid-19, contractors were not always able to work which caused the approximate time to complete construction to be two years. The opening date of Crazy Cakes was Sept. 8, and the bakery received an overwhelming response from the community. People rallied in as soon as they opened, and everyone was extremely supportive. The business’ success has continued to grow from then, and despite being open for less than two months, the name Crazy Cakes has already become a huge hit in Port Washington.
“I have not personally gone to Crazy Cakes yet, but I always hear people asking each other if they have gone to this new bakery in town, so I’m thinking of checking it out soon this week,” said Freshman Rino Sekiyama.
The interior design of Crazy Cakes was inspired by a barn-like, rustic feeling, but with a modern twist. Tiger designed the layout herself and wanted customers to feel warm and welcomed when entering the bakery. She grew up in Rockland County and has a cabin in the Adirondack Mountains which greatly helped to inspire the design. Tiger prefers a comfortable and mellow setting which ties perfectly with cupcakes and other baked treats.
“I absolutely adore the interior design. The feeling inside is really warm and homely and fits the ambiance of all seasons. It almost feels like a mom’s Pinterest board on cafe designs,” said Freshman Fiona Zeng.
Although Crazy Cakes currently offers custom pre-order artisanal cakes, they’ve mostly been selling small treats, like cupcakes, cookies, and chocolate-dipped treats. Tiger is looking to pick up the pace and hire professional bakers to work with custom designs. Unfortunately, It’s been difficult to find professionals, and since Crazy Cakes bakes everything from scratch, handling a business that has food trucks, storefront, and private events, becomes a lot of work.
Crazy Cakes accepts donations and supports the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Recently, the business has also donated to a suicide prevention group. Erica wants to give back to the community as much as possible, and Crazy Cakes is always open to generosity and helping others.
