Dance Intramurals Begin at Schreiber

Dance Intramurals is a new after-school program started by Kaitlin Szczesny, one of Schreiber’s physical education teachers.  She teaches two dance gym elective courses: Dance and Movement and Advanced Dance & Choreography.

“As part of an extension to our dance curriculum within the physical education department at Schreiber, I firmly believe that creating an intramural dance program would provide students with an additional opportunity to remain physically active after school,” said Ms. Szczesny.

Students will have the opportunity to learn combinations and dance in many different genres, including hip hop, jazz, Bollywood, Latin jazz, and more.  They will also do dance workouts and Zumba.  The program has even recently featured a student teaching the club members a dance.

“I really like dance, I just didn’t have the opportunity to do it outside of school,” said senior Catherine Altamirano, who has attended the program.

Dance Intramurals also gives students a chance to dance, if they can’t fit a dance gym class into their schedule.  It doesn’t force students to make a huge commitment, and provides opportunities for self-expression and fun after school.

“I was so excited to hear that Schreiber would have an opportunity for students who were interested in dancing,” said sophomore Averie Masia.

The program is “a time where students can come to dance without the pressure to perform,” said Ms. Szczesny.

It is open to people of all different skill and experience levels.  There are no tryouts, and anyone is welcome to join.

“Dance allows for students to express themselves, communicate, release stress, be creative, develop physical fitness, build self-confidence, and build relationships with others,” said Ms. Szczesny.

This new program began on Oct. 25.  It meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. in the Student Commons, and it also meets on some Thursdays.  Upcoming meetings will take place on Nov. 22, Dec. 6, Dec. 8, Dec. 13, Dec. 15, Dec. 16, and Dec. 20.  There are flyers posted throughout the school with this information as well.
