Golden Globes 2022: A star-less, audience-less, and host-less award show
The annual Golden Globe Awards took place Sunday evening on Jan. 9. After a long year of altered award ceremonies, such as the Grammys and Oscars, many were hoping for a traditional award show set up, complete with red carpet coverage, extravagant dresses, notable hosts, and an easy way to broadcast or livestream. However, the 2022 Golden Globe Awards did the opposite. After a New York Times investigation of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the company behind the awards show has been in hot water. As a result NBC decided to not even televise the 2022 awards show, leaving them without any media coverage.
“The fact that the awards show couldn’t even be televised is shocking to me. Is this going to become the new normal of our beloved award shows?” said sophomore Lauren Young.
Many are wondering the same question: will this become our new normal of award shows? The only people in attendance at the Golden Globe Awards were 70 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and it took place at its usual location, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California.
While the awards show can be considered upsetting, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was able to release the nominees and winners to their website and Twitter account. West Side Story won Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. Will Smith took home the award for Best Performance in a Drama Motion Picture for his role in King Richard, a film detailing the lives of Serena and Venus Williams. Andrew Garfield won the award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Motion Picture for his role in Tick, Tick…Boom!.
“Andrew Garfield winning a Golden Globe Award is so well deserved, and I am so excited to see what projects he will be working on next,” said senior Jae Longaro.
As for the television portion of the Golden Globes, Succession won for Best Television Series. Furthermore, Jason Sudeikis from Ted Lasso, a heartwarming show which details an American football coach coaching soccer in the UK, won Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy. As for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television, Michael Keaton won for his strong role in the series Dopesick, and for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Supporting Role, O Yeong-su won for his role in Squid Game. Lastly the Best Original Song for a Motion Picture was “No Time to Die” by Billie Eilish.
“Even though I love to watch the awards at home with my family, I am just glad and grateful that I was able to find out the nominees and winners of the Golden Globe Awards,” said senior Nicole Meehan.
While the 2022 Golden Globe Awards were far from perfect, they definitely left an impression on the media. The extreme lack of media coverage, red carpet looks, a joking host, and even celebrities can be considered highly disappointing for those who tune into the Golden Globes every year. With the Grammy awards postponed and after the last two years we’ve had, many are wondering if this will become an award show. Moving forward into 2022, fans hope that award season only goes up from here.
