New shows and movies on different streaming platforms offer an exciting start to the new year,
Streaming services are bringing lots of new shows and movies to their platforms in the new year, and platforms like Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+ have all added new content for viewers to stream.
On Netflix, new TV shows include The Hype House, The Journalist, and Archive 81. The Hype House is a new reality TV series based on TikTok celebrities. The cast includes Chase Hudson, Nikita Dragun, Alex Warren, Kouvr Annon, Larray Merritt, and many other popular TikTokers. So far, there are eight episodes available.
According to the Netflix description, the show provides “an inside look at social media’s most talked about stars as they navigate fame, love, and friendship while creating content and living together.”
Nextflix canceled other shows in the same teen genre for the making of The Hype House, and although fans of The Hype House are thrilled, many are disappointed by the other show cancellations.
“I’m pretty disappointed, honestly. Netflix canceled pretty good shows for teens who aren’t as talented actors. If it wasn’t already obvious that Netflix cares about profit over quality, it definitely is now,” said freshman Sarah Germana.
That being said, there are other highly anticipated shows being released on Netflix, two being The Journalist and Archive 81. The Journalist is a Japanese TV show about a reporter covering a government corruption scandal as enemies try to get in her way. The show stars Ryoko Yonekura, Go Ayano, and Ryusei Yokohama. Season one comes out on Jan. 13. Archive 81 tells the story of an archivist who is going through old videos when he gets pulled into a mystery concerning kidnappings and a demonic cult. The show stars Mamoudzou Athie and Dina Shahibi, and season one debuts on Jan. 14.
There are various new movies and a TV show coming to other platforms like Disney+ this month, including Betty White Goes Wild!, Assembled: The Making of Hawkeye, and season two of The World According to Jeff Goldblum. In Betty White Goes Wild!, the recently deceased Betty White travels to the San Diego and Los Angeles Zoos to learn more about big cats and their lives, as well as their behavior. White, who died on Dec. 31 at the age of 99, was an activist for animal rights and worked with zoos her entire career. This National Geographic documentary will be available on Jan. 14. Assembled: The Making of Hawkeye, is another documentary-type film about the process of making the hit Marvel series on Disney +, Hawkeye. The show’s first season featured stars such as Hailee Steinfled and Jeremy Renner; the documentary comes out on Jan. 19. Hawkeye came to Disney+ last year and showed two skilled archers working to unravel a criminal conspiracy.
“Hawkeye was a great show, and I hope they talk about the holiday movies that inspired so many of the memorable moments in the documentary,” said freshman Kaitlyn Schechter.
Season two of The World According to Jeff Goldblum comes out on Jan. 19. In season one of the National Geographic docu-series, Goldblum, who starred in the Jurassic Park movies, ‘discovers’ everyday items, from coffee to RV’s. In the new season, he will explore a whole new set of interests, including puzzles, motorcycles, and even birthdays.
There are two anticipated additions to the lineup on HBO Max this month: season two of their hit show Euphoria and the long-awaited Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts. In the Harry Potter reunion, viewers watch as stars like Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Tom Felton reminisce over filming the Harry Potter series 20 years later. This special includes exclusive interviews with the cast and even a tour of the set.
“I loved the Harry Potter movies and all the actors’ memories from the set were so interesting,” said freshman Emma Gannon.
Season two of Euphoria comes out on Jan. 9 and is expected to pick up right where the first season left off in 2019. The series will continue to follow Rue Bennett, played by Zendaya, while she battles love, loss, and addiction.
“I am so excited for the new season to finally come out after waiting for so long,” said freshman Athena Dristas.
This award-winning show has many other stars in it, including Maude Apatow, Angus Cloud, and Eric Dane. It was written by Sam Levinson, who wrote Malcom and Mary.
Streaming services adding new shows and movies to their line-ups introduces enthusiasts to a whole new world of viewings, actors to follow, and music to listen to.
