New York Fashion Week exposes viewers to new ideas

There are four cities across the globe with the most influential Fashion Weeks: London, Milan, Paris, and New York.  The extravagant semi-annual event, New York Fashion Week, celebrated its 60th anniversary this Sept. thanks to the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).  The organization is responsible for the arrangement of the schedule, including over 110 designers and countless extravagant runway shows and parties.  This year, New York Fashion week began on Friday, Sept. 9 and ended the night of Sept. 14.  Spring Studios served as the central headquarters; however, many shows were held in chic and artistic locations scattered throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn.  One of the most glorious aspects of NYFW is that it features established luxury designers while simultaneously sanctioning the growth of small creators trying to make a mark on the city with their fashion.

“This year marks the 60th anniversary of the CFDA, and as the organizer of the official NYFW schedule, we are incredibly proud to release a lineup that reflects our founding principle: to promote American fashion on a global scale.  We celebrate the collective excellence, diversity and resilience of our industry and look forward to a strong American collections season alongside our esteemed international guests,” said CEO Steven Kolb in an interview with CFDA. who/where did he say this?

Another show that received an overwhelming amount of media attention was Kourtney Kardashian Barker x Boohoo.  The reality T.V. star was asked by boohoo to be their sustainability ambassador.  However, it is common knowledge that their clothing is made using fast-fashion.  These two seem to contradict each other which has turned some heads and resulted in backlash against Kourtney.  Though, recent information has given further insight to her vision. The goal isn’t to make Boohoo completely environmentally friendly (as that would be unrealistic with the amount of clothing they produce), but rather to help them move in the right direction in becoming greener.  The line includes 45 pieces all made with recycled fibers and recycled vintage clothing.  Kourtney spent the year prior to the collections release consulting environmental experts on ways to reduce the waste made by the brand’s production.  People online are impressed with her thorough research and determination to  make an impact, not just making empty promises for praise.

“I thought about the attention this collaboration would bring to people who may otherwise have no idea about the impacts of fast fashion on our planet.  I thought about how pushing Boohoo to make some initial changes and then holding them accountable to larger change would be impactful.  It’s definitely making some noise which is exactly what I was hoping for,” said Kourtney Kardashian on Instagram.

Her idea was to push the brand into taking baby steps towards improvement while also igniting conversation about the environment.

The new fashion line includes a Blink 182 tee-shirt, a tribute to Kourtney’s new husband Travis Barker’s rock band.  Another piece is a two piece mesh set designed by his tattoo artist.  A lot of the line is in dark colors and meant to be edgy.  People seem to like how much thought she put into the collection and how many personal elements were incorporated into the clothes.  A large part of the reason Kourney Kardashian Barker x Boohoo is succeeding is because of its affordability with prices ranging from $6-$100.

“I was surprised that Kourtney Kardashians fashion line was affordable because I feel like people just associate the Kardahsians with high end luxury stuff that costs a ton of money,” said sophomore Sloane Silverstein.

This year, the Vogue World Show was an extremely memorable experience that broke out of the confinement of traditional runway shows.  It was meant to highlight the influential characters and personalities of people in the fashion and entertainment world.  On a beautiful cobblestone street in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, the guest list, composed by Anna Wintour, was commendable, including innumerable A-list celebrities.  Some attendees included Kanye West, Doja Cat, Jared Leto, Sabrina Carpenter, and Dove Cameron.  Top supermodels Bella and Gigi Hadid, and Kendall Jenner walked the runway along with stunt cyclists, dancers, and other talented performers.  To close the extravagant showcase Lil Nas X finished off with an invigorating performance of his hit song “Industry Baby.”

“I thought Lil Nas X´s appearances at New York Fashion Week were really funny and reflected his personality.  I even saw on Instagram that he walked a red carpet with a stuffed animal,” said sophomore Emma Goldberg.

After a three-year hiatus, Tommy Hilfiger returned to New York Fashion Week.  The show took place at the Skyline Drive-in Theater in Brooklyn and despite the rain and audience members wearing clear ponchos, the show was still an immense success.  Many of the models wore impressively large puffy coats with bright colors and others in more traditional attire that we have seen from the brand in the past.  Another brand that had a successful show was Fendi who as opposed to highlighting their clothing put heavy emphasis on their famous Baguette Bag which has been considered an “It bag” for 25 years now.

Fashion Weeks throughout the globe all have an intense influence on cultures everywhere.  New York Fashion Week in particular is the pinnacle of creativity and the demonstration of new ideas.  From studying and understanding the demonstrated fashion, we can forecast trends.  This year there were tons of super-mini bags, colorful knits, and shimmering lace.  From all the extreme talent around the world coming to one city, we are introduced to new and wonderful creations.
