Editorial: Cafeteria Tables and Chairs

Last week, students were surprised to see that the cafeteria had a makeover. The new, less bulky tables and chairs were a nice improvement to the overall aesthetic of the school cafeteria.

It was time to replace the old furniture that was once present in the cafeteria.  Although the school has made some improvements over the last year including adding booths by the windows and high top tables around the poles, the large, and mismatched, tables along with the stained chairs were finally ready to go.

For this school year, there have been changes in the schedule which has resulted in two lunch periods instead of the usual three.  This means that there are large crowds of people coming to the cafeteria at a time.  Most of the time there are never enough seats to accommodate a large group of friends at one table.  This was due to the fact that the old cafeteria chairs were bulky, making it hard to fit everyone around one table and sometimes feel left out at the table.  The lunch periods are a time to catch up with friends during the school day so it is hard when there aren’t enough seats, let alone room, at the cafeteria table for people to congregate.  Furthermore, none of the old tables matched the rest of the new furniture that the school implemented months ago.  With brand new blue booths and hightops, tan and black tables and chairs did not match the overall look of the room.

These new tables and chairs were a good addition to the cafeteria.  The tables were custom made to have different Schreiber and Port logos across the top.  Although the tables vary in size, they all match.  Another difference between the new and old tables is that these new tables have built in backless stools for students to sit.  The new tables offer much more space for students to sit at, with some that could fit up to 12 people.  Schreiber also added more high top tables throughout the center of the cafeteria for additional seating.

Although there are numerous positives regarding these improvements, there are also some flaws.  For instance, with the switch from chairs to stools, there is no place to put students’ jackets while eating lunch.  Also, it makes it hard to share seats with friends if there were only smaller tables available to sit at.

Despite manageable disappointments with the new seating arrangement, numerous students are happy with the improvements.  The furniture makes the cafeteria look less stuffy while allowing for more seating for students.  Adding new tables and chairs to Schreiber’s cafeteria was a great improvement and one that is much appreciated by the students.
