Adding to an already competitive market filled with many ice cream parlors, Uncle Louie G’s will officially open in Port Washington. Starting as a small shop in Brooklyn, New York back in 1959, the business has expanded to over 50 locations across the country. With only two other Long Island locations in Merrick and Floral Park, Port Washington is the newest town to experience Uncle Louie G’s as a local business.
This new sweet treat shop, expected to be opening in the coming months, will rival neighboring ice cream spots, such as Smusht, 16 Handles, and Baskin Robbins. In addition to offering ices, which are perfect for those with dairy restrictions, Uncle Louie G’s will offer a range of ice creams, sundaes, ice cream cakes, milkshakes, coffee, and other drinks.
The unique offerings will give customers a large number of options, but Uncle Louie G’s will need something special to stand out against competitors. When comparing Uncle Louie G’s to other local ice cream businesses in Port, there are a few notable differences.
“I think that Port already has many options to choose from for ice cream. I’m excited to try Uncle Louie G’s, but I think the options that are already here are sufficient,” said junior Daniel Ross.
First off, the emphasis on ices offer a low-calorie, dairy-free option that are not prioritized by many of the older ice cream shops in Port. While other shops may serve sorbets or the occasional non-dairy option, they tend to focus heavily on indulgent ice cream flavors, sundaes, and other sweet treats.
“Adding sugar-free and kosher options is a great way to draw attention to alternatives that allow a broader range for locals to enjoy,” said junior Dylan Borell.
The new shop’s modern vibe and bright colors can attract younger customers looking for a place to hang out, which sets it apart from the more classic, family-oriented ice cream parlors. The shop will open soon, right on Main Street across from Gino’s, making it convenient to grab a scoop after a slice of pizza.
“I know the school year just began, but I am looking forward to a new place for my friends and I to go for some frozen treats in the warm months,” said junior Tori Kaufman.
From bubblegum to peanut butter cup, the wide range of flavors offers an option for even the pickiest eaters. As well as classic and unique flavors, Uncle Louie G’s has sugar-free and kosher options like cherry, lemon, and rainbow.
A lot of the other ice cream shops in town are smaller or more crowded, so having the option of a new space will definitely help to split up the crowds, cutting back on the amount of time waiting in line for dessert on a fun Friday night.
It may be difficult for Uncle Louie G’s to establish a dominating presence in the ice cream industry because of local businesses that have been in Port for years. However, Uncle Louie G’s new ices and ice cream delivers a unique mix of lighter frozen treats with familiar flavors and will offer something fresh for customers.
“I think the competition will be beneficial for all ice cream shops in Port, the ice cream will only get better as they challenge one another for who will have the best scoop. May the best business win!” said junior Noelia Grullon.
One of the unique aspects of Uncle Louie G’s is their catering and eventing opportunities. They have various packages eligible for order in case an event is in need of a sweet cold treat. You can book an ice cream truck, a box full of ices, or ice cream of your choosing. They also allow you to mix ices and ice cream in the package for extra variety. If families are interested in having Uncle Louie G’s catered, all they need to do is call their number, tell them your location, and what flavors you want, and they will handle the rest.
