The school year has kicked off strong with many student groups and honor societies getting to work. Two groups in particular that have made a strong impact this month have been the Foreign Language Honor Society and the Jewish Culture Club. These clubs include many students who are passionate about culture and language. The month of October is a special time for each club because they are each marking important anniversaries. Schreiber should continue to encourage these cultural celebrations to honor our diverse community.
For foreign language students, particularly those who take Spanish, there have been many activities going on to celebrate Hispanic History Month. The hallways have been decorated by the students to spread the celebration, and a special fact about the Hispanic community is shared on the announcements. This sense of community is a positive attribute of our school, making the Hispanic population feel welcomed, and teaching others about their culture, so students can learn to respect their peers.
Also, during the month of October, Italian Heritage Month is celebrated. The foreign language hallway is decorated with various signs that celebrate Italian culture and heritage. Some posters highlight different Italians, such as Galileo, or accomplishments in music or sports. Other events celebrating Italian culture include a screening of the film Cabrini, a demonstration of the process of making mozzarella cheese, and a fleet of Ferraris revving in the circle.
Additionally, the Jewish Culture Club had a strong start to their school year, with their club meeting having high attendance so far. The club decided to hold an event commemorating the one-year anniversary of the Oct. 7 massacre that took place in Israel, and to pray for the hostages that are still in captivity.
It has been important to have this club and show a sense of pride and community among Jewish students here at Schreiber. There are also some Israeli students at our school who feel represented knowing that they are supported by their fellow students and teachers.
In addition to the event led by the Jewish Culture Club, Principal Dr. Kathryn Behr gave an announcement about the one year anniversary on the morning of Oct. 7, letting all students know that they have access to guidance counselors and are supported in school.
Creating a sense of community among different groups at Schreiber is a top priority of the school. Teachers and students coming together for events of remembrance and celebration is exactly what our school is about. We need to create more of these kinds of events in the future and make sure all kinds of students get to experience feeling their culture respected at school.
