On Oct. 24, Schreiber ENL students attended the Long Island Latino Teachers Association (LILTA) Young Men’s Annual Conference.
The ENL Department Pre-K through 12 continues to strengthen college and career readiness for English Language Learners (ELL) by providing meaningful exposure to higher education institutions and diverse professional pathways. Under the leadership of Ms. Zarate, who has established and expanded these partnerships as part of her ongoing goals for increasing opportunities for ELLs, the department ensures that students have access to transformative experiences that support their future success.
In partnership with LILTA, the ENL department provides students with conferences designed to inspire, inform, and empower the next generation of leaders. LILTA is a non-profit organization with the mission to increase graduation rates and higher education enrollment, retention, and completion for all students. Composed of educators from across Long Island, members of LILTA look to protect students, encourage family involvement in the school experience, and to promote equal opportunities for all students. They host many events throughout the year, such as a Hispanic Heritage Celebration, a Young Women’s Summer Institute, and an Educator Trip to the NYC Slavery and Underground Railroad Tour. Within the educational system and school community, LILTA works to address the common risk factors that impact the academic outcomes of the Latino student population and other ethnic groups. Some of their goals include preventing discriminatory practices and procedures, promoting equal access to educational opportunities, increasing diversity within teachers, and educating communities.
The Nassau County Annual Men Conference: Men Leaders Paving Paths for Young Men is an annual opportunity to learn about the college experience and meet many professional successful men who share their passion, college preparation and career paths. In collaboration with Adelphi, LILTA recruits respected individuals in different fields whose stories will inspire students to see the power of education in transforming one’s life. LILTA hopes that as students engage with the exceptional professionals, they will feel represented, seen, and encouraged to step into leadership roles. This event is designed to inspire and motivate students to receive a high school diploma and pursue college degrees. Many guest speakers came from many different backgrounds describing their professions from education, sports, communications and media, public service, STEM fields, law, and politics. Students also learn about the admissions process into the college world and explore potential career paths while building confidence and leadership skills.
Throughout the day, Schreiber students participated in workshops, career panels, motivational sessions, and campus activities that emphasized academic achievement and future planning.
The opportunities will continue in the spring. Female students will attend the LILTA Young Women’s Conference on March 19th at Stony Brook University, where they will engage in similar sessions that highlight the importance of education, leadership, and representation across various professions.
By prioritizing these enriching experiences and cultivating strong community partnerships, the ENL Department Pre-K–12 reaffirms its commitment to supporting English Language Learners academically, socially, and professionally. These conferences help students envision themselves in college and career spaces – an essential step toward ensuring equitable opportunities for all learners.
